"Stephen Roberts enlisted in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment on 1 May 1777 and re-inlisted on 1 November 1779 under Captain Thomas Moultrie. He became a corporal on 6 May 1777 in the Grenadier company. He was reprimanded for being absent without leave on 4 November 1777. He was promoted to sergeant on 27 June 1778 in Captain Moultrie's company. He transferred to the 1st Vacant Company commanded by Lieutenant Richard Bohun Baker on 13 July 1778. He returned to Captain Moultrie's company and was at the siege of Savannah."
