Boy Scouts of America Troop 572
NCAC Council, Goose Creek District
Scouting in America has been a great tradition for more than 100 years. One in four boys join the Boy Scouts, yet only about 4-5 out of 100 scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout, which can take an average of 5-7 years to obtain. There are 350 requirements to earn the Eagle Scout Rank, and the Eagle Scout project is the pinnacle event that defines the eligibility of the Eagle Scout, and is an accomplishment remembered proudly throughout the Scout's life.
Troop 572, from Potomac Falls Virginia, is a large and active troop in Northern Virginia and benefits from being members of the Goose Creek District and the NCAC Council. Special thanks goes to Eagle Scout Mentor and Deputy District Commissioner Mike Egerer for his lifelong involvement in scouting and his great support for this Eagle Scout project.

Historic Trails Award
We were excited to find out that the work done for this project and the Dedication Ceremony make it possible for scouts to earn a special scouting award called Historic Trails. Each scout who helps on the restoration or participates in the ceremony, and also participates in the scout camp out May 4-5th, will earn this award.
About the Award
Love of America and devotion to our country depend upon a thorough appreciation of the ideals, principles, and traditions that have made our country strong. Historic Trails Award requirements emphasize cooperation between historic societies and Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing units. A unit should establish a close relationship with a local society as soon as possible when planning a historic activity.
Award Requirements
To earn the award, members of your unit must plan and participate in a historic activity. A unit historic activity requires members to:
1. Locate a historic trail or site and study information relating to it.
2. Hike or camp two days and one night along the trail or in the vicinity of the site.
3. Cooperate with an adult group such as a historic society to restore and mark all or part of this trail or site. Or cooperate with such a group to plan and stage a historic pageant, ceremony, or other public event related to this trail or site—such an event should be large enough to merit coverage by the local press. Your unit leader must then file the Historic Trails Award application with your local council service center.
